Tomb Raider film reboot confirmed, The Departed producer on board (Tomb Raider (2011))

The Tomb Raider brand reboot is getting support from Hollywood. GK Films today announced it has purchased the Tomb Raider movie rights from Square Enix’s subsidiary studio, Crystal Dynamics, and it will be refreshing the film franchise for theaters starting in 2013.

Last time Lara Croft’s cinematic reboot was discussed, it was being developed by Terminator Salvation producer Dan Lin with actresses like Megan Fox and Olivia Wilde up for the part of Angelina Jolie’s replacement. Now, the movie has officially fallen into the hands of The Departed producer Graham King and Rango executive producer Tim Headington. No actress has yet been attached.

“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the Tomb Raider phenomenon,” said King in the press release.

This will be the third movie to invoke the Tomb Raider title. The previous films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003), amassed over $ 430 million in combined worldwide ticket sales. GK Films gave no indication if the new films will bear any resemblance to Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider videogame reboot, which is scheduled for release later this year.
