Peter Molyneux says a lot of things. The head of Lionhead Studios is most famous for his work on the Fable series. But he’s also infamous for making hyperbolic statements, earning him a reputation as an exaggerator, which he’s been trying to live down since the release of the first Fable.
Speaking at the Eurogamer Expo today, Molyneux revealed what he believes is the worst thing he’s ever said in a retrospective on the Fable series. After speaking about his departure from Bullfrog Productions – where he worked on Syndicate – Molyneux explained, “We went away worked hard at building a team, Big Blue Box. We were lucky enough to get a contract with Microsoft. And then I went out to the press and said something terrible.”
“Probably the worst thing I’ve ever said in my life. I said Fable is going to be the greatest roleplaying game of all time. That was the first time I really realized that you can make huge mistakes in the press – you can’t just stand up and get all enthusiastic like I do with developers,” said Molyneux.

Molyneux insists that Lionhead Studios is “still trying to make the greatest roleplaying game of all time.”
But despite the many improvements and features Lionhead Studios has added to the series over time, Molyneux jokingly admitted, “I still can’t persuade my wife to like Fable.”
When it comes to talking about other games, Molyneux was perfectly comfortable with his usual enthusiasm, saying that Ico for the PlayStation 2 had “probably the greatest game design of all time.”
