NEW YORK (Reuters) – Electronic Arts will buy Chillingo, the British publisher of the popular mobile game, Angry Birds, for $20 million in cash, a source close to the deal said on Wednesday.

An EA spokeswoman confirmed the agreement but did not disclose the price.

“By acquiring Chillingo, EA Mobile is increasing its market leadership on the Apple Platform as well as reaffirming its position as the world’s leading wireless entertainment publisher,” EA’s Holly Rockwood said in a statement.

Last November, EA, the traditional publisher of video games, bought Playfish, a start-up company that makes social games, in a deal valued at up to $400 million.

Angry Birds is one of the most popular mobile games on Apple’s iPhone and iPad.

EA shares were down 1.2 percent to $15.40 in afternoon trading on Nasdaq.
